Bush, Cheney, and the Threats to American Democracy

During the years of my sobriety, it is sometimes difficult for me to maintain the level of serenity that I have achieved, particularly when I watch the news and see stories of how President Bush and Vice-President Cheney are subverting the intent of the Constitution and the Founding Fathers of the United States. Three recent incidents in particular are prime examples of the Administration’s contempt for the law, the American people, and basic honesty and decency.

There is an ongoing legal case stemming from several Bush re-election campaign rallies during 2004 in which protestors who were non-violent were either denied access to the rally or forcably expelled from public places, either by law enforcement or by Bush campaign staff because they were deemed threats to the President. The New York Times reports over the weekend that attorney’s for the President are actually arguing in court, and this is not an exaggeration, that opposition to the President can be considered a threat. I am reminded of the anti-Putin, pro-democracy rallies in Moscow that are routinely broken up by Russian police with beatings and arrests.

Secondly, in the case of the White House directing the firing of Federal Attorneys who were deemed by the Political Office not to be politically supportive enough of the President, (for having the temerity to prosecute corrupt Republicans such as Duke Cunningham), FIVE MILLION emails from both the official White House servers and the Republican Party’s system, which was illegal for the White House to use as per the Presidential Records Act, DISAPPEARED”accidentally. The Republicans impeached President Clinton for lying under oath about a sexual affair, but the President and his staff can fire Federal Attorneys for political reasons and then destroy evidence. Amazing.

Finally, George Tenet, the former Director of Central Intelligence, to whom the President awarded the Medal of Freedom, has written a book that describes how Vice-President Cheney demanded evidence and interpretations from the CIA that conformed to his conclusions and decisions regarding Iraq and the threat of Al-Qaida.

Surely, among the DOZENS of political scandals erupting from the festering sores that are the Bush Administration, there has to be SOMETHING for which the Congress can impeach the President.
